Key achievements in environment/social activities

Chemicals
Dramatic reduction in chemical usage due to better maintenance practices and hand weeding.  Chemicals are only applied as necessary, when weeds and pests exceed 40% of the area and cannot be controlled by hand maintenance.

Several reasons for our reluctance to use chemicals.  First, maintain a healthy environment for golfers, staff and the animals and birds which live on the course. Second, manual weeding is less expensive, and also creates jobs for people living around the golf course.

Water
There is no natural water on the site.  We built a self-contained water catchment system involving ponds and man-made rivers. These water features gather rainwater during the rainy season.

In the dry season in particular, when rain in scarce, all of the water for watering the golf course comes from sewage from the town’s irrigation system. We channel this sewage into our water treatment complex. We built five layers of ponds in which the sewage is treated naturally. Fish and plants in the ponds are of a great help to get rid of unwanted contaminants in the sewage. No chemicals are used in treating the water. And when the
water comes out of the fifth filter pond it is as clean as the rain water.

The fish that we put in the ponds in the beginning have been breeding in significant numbers. We never sell the fish, instead we let people living next to our golf course fish during night time when no players are in the golf course. Also they are only allowed to use fishing lines to catch the fish. No any other means of fish catching is allowed. In this way the population of the fish is maintained and people from around our golf course can always have protein.

Biodiversity
Borobudur Golf course is in the  middle of the town of Magelang with a population of about 120,000. The golf course serves as a nature reserve for the growing and busy town. Trees, shrubs and flowers are grown in the golf course contributing to the beauty and diversity of vegetation. Next to the golf course is a hill, Mount Tidar, a government nature reserve, which is completely covered with forest and which is the home of different kinds of birds, reptiles, as well as small mammals.  These animals use our golf course as a buffer zone.

In 2009 Unnes (The State University of Semarang), a teacher training college which is located in the provincial capital city of Central Java some 75 kilometers north of the town of Magelang, supplied the golf course with different varieties of rare trees. Some of the trees produce fruit which are also rare. Part of our responsibility is to preserve rare trees, which otherwise risk extinction.  Whenever an influential person visits the golf course, he or she is always asked to plant a tree; we erect a stone engraved with the date and the name of the person who planted each particular tree. Through these actions the number and the variety of vegetation keep increasing.

Energy
Electricity is only used when necessary; staff are trained to shut off power when not needed.

Education
Provide scholarships and stipends for the caddies and other staff to further their education.

Historical and Cultural Heritage
We work with local tourism partners to protect and promote historical heritage, in particular the world-famous Borobudur temple and an important Dutch colonial building located nearby.

Borobudur Golf is also adjacent to Mount Tidar, and several holes are adjacent to this sacred site. The golf course thereby serves as a buffer zone which helps prevent vandalism and illegal access within the Mount Tidar reserve.

Javanese legend says that Mount Tidar (it is called Mount, although it is little more than a hill), is thought to be the epicenter of the island of Java and is the point where the gods "nailed" Java to the earth to prevent the island from shaking during volcanic eruptions and sinking.

Mount Tidar is also believed to be significant in the network of Javanese sacred sites located throughout the region.

Philosophy

"To provide an exciting golfing experience on a beautiful course that reflects the environment and the cultural heritage of Central Java."

Mr. S. D. Darmono
President director of PT. Jababeka
