Key Achievements
Water
- Irrigation water comes from a closed system in which water is supplied from on-course lakes, and rainfall and excess irrigation water is recaptured and piped back to the lakes.
- Innovative irrigation techniques to reduce water quantity and frequency of irrigation -- installing part-circle heads to avoid off-target watering, watering hot spots to target needed areas only rather than running the entire irrigation system during the peak of the day, reducing or eliminating irrigation on all unused or minimally used portions of the property and incorporating weather data into daily and long-term irrigation decisions.
Biodiversity
- Protection of wildlife habitat, and protection of endangered or threatened wildlife and plant species from disturbance by golfers and maintenance activities by signage, fencing, or creation of special “environmentally sensitive zones”.
- Installing and monitoring nest boxes and other structures to enhance nesting sites for birds and bats
Environmental
- Regularly work to improve soil health by amending organic content, aerating, improving water filtration, using organic fertilizers to improve the soil condition and conducting soil tests to determine appropriate fertilizer applications.
- Reducing the use of chemicals by applying pesticides only when and where scouting indicates that pest threshold levels have been exceeded, treating problems at the proper time and under the proper weather conditions to maximize effectiveness and minimize harmful environmental impacts, and using hand weeding techniques when possible instead of using chemical.
Social/community
- Making donations to the school and hospital in local communities.
Philosophy
Springfield Corporate Philosophy: “We should all be grateful to Mother Nature for giving us our Springfield treasure. The fullness of nature, the bugs and bees, forests and flowers, lake and reservoir life and birds and butterflies. So we must all do what we can, be what we are, and care… and love… and protect what we have been given.”
Dr. Thomas Sombuntham
